Hey kids, there is a mean, mean teacher named Mr. John Hutchins who does not want you to learn about the great city of New York.  He makes fun of the wonderful Mr. Sims who takes the time to send you these well thought out slide shows.  I’m sorry that the world is filled with people like this, but I hope you enjoy the pictures of the Brooklyn Bridge and Central Park.  Notice how wild Central Park looks.  It was designed that was on purpose.

The Brooklyn Bridge is an American icon.  One you hear about since you are little.  Growing up we had a neighbor named curiously enough, Pat Patrick, who grew up in the New York City area.  We heard numerous stories of Brooklyn and the bridge as well as Coney Island.  I enjoyed David McCullouch’s The Great Bridge the best of the books we read, and looked forward to the bridge tour.  It did not disappoint.  I really do not teach anything about the bridge in school, but will use the slide show to give kids an idea of New York City and its most famous bridge.

The theme of the trip so far is about country rubes coming to New York and perhaps the most famous country rube of them all, Jed Clampett, purchased the Brooklyn Bridge from Honest John played by Phil Silvers.  After walking the bridge, I can almost see why Jed “purchased’ them.  Now, take away the old decrepit hat; shave the moustache; put a pooka chain necklace on him and you will agree the Jed Clampett and John Hutchins look an awful lot alike.  In fact on the rubish scale they are twins.

    Mark,

What a great teaching tool for your kids. Nice going. I think you should have Hutch send a few pictures to your class though, just for spice. Seriously, it is a great experience for your kids to be experiencing this with you. Have you tried adding video of you talking to your kids? That could be a cool interaction. A “Greetings from NYC” kind of thing.

    Wow Mark,

I thought we were friends!! Seriously, spell my name correctly if you want to prick me! LMAO!!!

    Commodor Hutch
