Chicago- Day One
As with all guys on this trip, they are not fully accepted in the group until King Hutch performs his now legendary ceremony where the subject kneels before the King and is annointed “knight”.

"The Ceremony"
Its either the ceremony or drink a half gallon of milk a day.

Got milk?
Spent the morning walking by the lake taking in Chicago.

Chicago
The Art Institiute of Chicago was amazing. Certainly seemed bigger than the Met in New York, but not quite as big as the Lourve in Paris. While touring, I was taken with Edward Hopper’s “Nighthawks.” At the museum gift shop, I checked out cards of Edward Hopper’s other paintings as well as a book about his life. I thought of an old idea I use at Christmas to further our art experience with my fifth graders. At Christmas, I take old Christmas cards trim them and place them in the center of a white paper. The students then have to extend the picture to the edges of the paper. I am going to take some American artists (Hopper predominately) and do the same project. Not only will it work fine mottor skills but gives kids a chance to experience great American artists.

Nighthawks
We do another art project based on Piet Mondrian’s use of primary colors and the use of black and white. Will be great to show additional pictures of his work.

Actually, I drank a gallon of milk that day.
Actually I drank multiple gallons of something else. It gives me the “gusto” to really knight others with the passion they deserve.
King Hutch
And after our walking tour the other knight, I’m, ready to crown someone.
Hi Mark
I like how you incorporate art into your classrooom by having the students extend the scene from a picture on to a piece of paper. This also helps the students to look at different types of art and make different connections with the work they are working on.
